Here in Toronto, we love the Cookbook Store. In Vancouver, we love Barbara-Jo\u2019s Books to Cooks, and a recent missive from her explains why.\u00a0 With her permission, I share it here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mission(ary) Statement:<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Barbara-Jo\u2019s \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Books to Cooks began with the idea that cookbooks deserve a place all their \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 own.<\/strong> A place where everyone \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from home cooks to international members of the culinary community could \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 gather to celebrate the pleasures of the table. For 16 years, we\u2019ve been a \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 proud supporter of cookbooks and \u2013 more importantly – the people who \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 continue to love them.<\/p>\n

We believe in the tangible delight of turning a page<\/strong>. Just \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as we believe that a collection of recipes or a cooking class is a gift \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that deserves to be properly savoured. We believe that speed and efficiency \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 can happily co-exist with a deeply felt sense of tradition. Most of all, we \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 believe in the enduring power of the cookbook.<\/p>\n

After a while, your best-loved cookbooks develop a certain patina. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Like a love note pressed between the pages of another time, they bear the \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 happy scars of distant celebrations. A spilled dash of flour from a long \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lost Thanksgiving, the handwritten reminder that your old Valentine has an \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 allergy. A worthy cookbook has worked hard to earn a lasting place in your \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 life. And, at Barbara-Jo\u2019s, we like to think we have as well. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen many changes over the years. <\/strong>Among them, a \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 world where the lure of instant communication is constantly threatening to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 overshadow the power of true connection. Now, more than ever, we feel that \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 making personal service a priority is the best way to do business.<\/p>\n

We enjoy talking to our customers and getting to know them.<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Over the years, many of them have become friends and we\u2019ve come to value \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 their support beyond words. Together, we have made a pact to share our \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lives through the mutual love of books and food.<\/p>\n

All of this takes time. And it has not been an easy journey. But every day \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is touched with a kind of magic. Here, we are surrounded by the cherished \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 weight of ideas. The endless possibilities of a good book opened to \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 thoughts of family, friends and the joys of celebration.<\/p>\n

What have we learned? That an open cookbook demands an open heart. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And an open heart is the best recipe of all.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
